Things to do with the kids this half-term that won’t cost you a fortune
Are you looking forward to the half-term? I often plan to have a ‘chilled’ week where I’m not rushing the kids from one place to another. But somehow, every holiday I find myself overcommitted and spending way too much money.
I know I’m not the only mum in Dorset hoping for good weather next week, so we can keep little ones busy without spending a fortune. To help you plan your week, I’ve put together a list of FREE or very low-cost events and activities suitable for kids of all ages.

Light up Poole: A FREE Art Festival that will delight young and old. It’ll be seen at Poole’s Town Centre and waterfront after dark from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd of February.
Shire Hall Historic Courthouse is allowing kids FREE entry if dressed as Pirates. They are also hosting Family Film Nights on the 18th and 20th of February for only £4 per kid, including popcorn and hot chocolate. Adults go FREE. Please check their website for more details.
RSPB Arne is hosting the Ladybird Spider Web Launch! with FREE entry for everyone, although carpark charges still apply. Also their exciting ‘Wild Things Trail’ is only £2 suggested donation.
Stour Valley Local Nature Reserve and Kingfisher Barn Visitor Centre are hosting their Environment Festival on the 21st of February with FREE entry for everyone. And their popular Spring Trail is back for only £1 per person. They are also running Lantern Making workshops for only £2.50 per child on the 15th and 22nd of February. You’ll need to book the workshops before attending.
Monkey World is running a ‘Kid 4 A Quid’ promotion when they take an *eligible* present for a primate. Each child must take a present. Please check their website for eligible presents and other T&C’s before attending.
The Red House Museum in Christchurch is running a series of special activities aimed at children under the age of 5. Storytelling, Bubble Workshops, Creative Play sessions and more. Entry to the museum is FREE and most activities require booking and a small fee per child, usually under £5.
Lounge One Cafe in Poole is running a Sand Art activity from only £2 per piece.
The Dorset Scrapstore is hosting World book Day Costume Making workshops on 18th and 19th of February for £4 per person, and a Family Glass Painting workshop on 22nd February for only £2.50 per person. You’ll need to book in advance.
Studio Poole has ‘Paint a Pot’ from just £5.99 every day and No studio fee! No need to book, just turn up.
Creative ME is hosting a messy play session in Christchurch for as little as £5 per child and £2 for accompanying adult. Also two adults and two children for only £10. You’ll need to book in advance.
Big Bounce & Jamie Jambo will be at Bourne Academy in Bournemouth. Entry starts at £4.5 per child. Check their Facebook page to book and for more details.
And last but definitely not least check out your local Libraries! They always run amazing groups and activities FREE of charge. For example, Dino fun at Corfe Mullen Library.
