“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” – Coretta Scott King
At a time when frankly most of us are feeling lost and confused, I’ve found a glimpse of hope in all the amazing people who’ve jumped into action to volunteer and offer support to anyone who needs it.
There have been new groups created on social media to bring us together as a local community and to make sure no one is left behind. Of course, we are all concerned about our loved ones’ health, but I can clearly see that many of us are also thinking about our local businesses, and we want to do our bit to help them get through these tough times.
So I wanted to highlight some of these brilliant initiatives and take the opportunity to thank those involved for their reassurance. Here are a few local groups I’ve found so far. I will also update this blog as I learn about new ones.
Poole Covid 19 Community Support: More than 1,000 local members offering support to those who need it. From dropping groceries at elderly neighbours’ doors, chatting to those feeling lonely on the phone or a video and picking up prescriptions. Please make sure you read the rules first, before getting in touch with anyone.
Dorset Art Eye-Spy!: Previously Dorset Hidden Books, this group encourages children in isolation to post any artwork they do on their windows for other little ones to spot while they go out on walks. A great idea, beautifully executed to keep our little ones connected.
@keepingdorsetafloat: An Instagram account dedicated to featuring local businesses offering any kind of service or discount during the social isolation period and probable lockdown.
@big_little studio: A local mum and designer posting daily ‘feel good’ graphics while she is in self-isolation.

Plan C: A great resource for parents full of education and entertainment ideas for kids of all ages.
I hope you find this useful. I will update this blog post as new groups appear in my radar.
You can also expect more blogs in the following days, including home activities for kids, online education resources, family films and easy family bakes.
