My name is Maria, and I’m the mum behind the Poole Mumbler. I wanted to welcome you and tell you the story of how this website came together.
I was born in Colombia, South America and I’m married to a Scot. We have two children aged three and five. Our son was born in Yorkshire, but due to special work and health circumstances, which I’ll share with you another time, we had to move countries and homes 5 times before he reached his third birthday. Our daughter was born during this chaotic time and we finally settled in Poole when she was only 3-months-old.
If you are a parent, you’ll be able to imagine how difficult it was to settle and make friends or ‘find our feet’ every time we moved home. Having a toddler first, and then also a new-born, meant I couldn’t remain stuck indoors. It forced me to go out and make friends and become part of the community really quickly. But of course it wasn’t easy. Not only did I need to find people I had something in common with – they also had to have children of a similar age to mine, and they needed to get along!
Life as a new mum in York was made much easier by the York Mumbler. I could find the answer to ANYTHING I needed to know, all in one place. But when I moved to Poole, I found out it was much harder to access the information I needed. Some of it was available online, but a lot of it was passed through word-of-mouth, which can be hard if you are new to a place and don’t have many friends.
Then one day I read a headline claiming that ‘90% of Mums Feel Lonely After Having Children’. It struck me that I wasn’t the only one. Even if Poole is your hometown you may not know where all the child-friendly classes, groups and activities are; or where to get breastfeeding support. You may not have friends with children and you may not know where to find a really great babysitter.
I wanted to do something about it. I got in touch with Mumbler HQ and I asked if I could bring the Mumbler to Poole. Since then I’ve been working really hard putting all the local information together so you can have it in one place, any time you need it. And you can access it on your phone, tablet or laptop wherever you are. I hope you find it useful.
But there’s more… We also have a lovely community on Facebook where all local mums and dads, grandparents and carers are welcome. This is a safe space to ask questions, make recommendations, or simply share something that’s on your mind. Please join us.
Also coming up: New mums meet ups. I’d love to help local mums make friends. I’ll be there and have a coffee with you, or help you to arrange playdates. I’ll also bring my unruly brood. Special promotions, discounts, freebiesand much, much more. Follow the Poole Mumbler in Facebook, Instagram and Twitter so you don’t miss out.
